Terms

Draft for review. This is not yet in effect, and bracketed text marks a decision still to be made.
Who we are
EQ Artists is run by The EQ Company (eq.company) ("EQ", "we", "us"). These terms apply when you visit eqartists.com, apply to join, or use the dashboard, the writing studio, the community and any related tools (together, "EQ Artists"). By using EQ Artists you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy.
Who can join
You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter a binding agreement. Joining starts with an application. We review every application and may approve or decline it at our discretion.
Keep your sign-in details to yourself and tell us at once if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
Your work
You own the writing you create on EQ Artists, including drafts, finished pieces, idea board notes, journal notes and reflections. You are free to publish your own work anywhere else, at any time.
When you submit work, you give EQ a non-exclusive, worldwide licence to store, copy, review, show to other writers on EQ Artists, and use that work and its writing-process record for the purposes described in our privacy policy and in the agreements you sign with EQ. Non-exclusive means we never stop you, or anyone you choose, from using your work.
If you delete a piece or close your account, we stop showing that work on EQ Artists. Copies that have already been de-identified (stored under a random ID, with nothing that identifies you) may be kept and used as described in our privacy policy.
Paid work, and how it is paid, is covered by the separate writing agreement you accept in Get paid. If that agreement and these terms disagree about paid work, the writing agreement wins.
Originality and honest process
EQ Artists exists to gather human judgement and human craft, so the work you submit must be your own.
- Do not submit writing produced by AI tools, or copied from someone else, as your own.
- Do not use tools to fake or alter the writing-process record.
- Flag any passage you are unsure about, as the studio asks.
How we check work
The writing studio records how a piece is written: edits, timing, pauses and active time. We use that record, and third-party originality and AI-detection checks, to confirm that work is human and original. We may decline, withhold or remove work that fails these checks, and we may suspend accounts that repeatedly break these terms.
The community
Treat other writers with respect. Do not harass anyone, post anything unlawful or hateful, share another writer's work outside EQ Artists without their permission, or share private information about anyone. We may remove posts and messages that break these rules.
Prompts, studies, unreleased features and other writers' work you see on EQ Artists are confidential. They are shared with you for your work here, so do not copy, post or share them outside EQ Artists. Your own writing stays yours to publish.
Texts and email
We email you about your account, your work and, if you choose, launches and news. You can turn launch and news emails off in account settings; account, receipt and payment emails always arrive. If you sign up for text updates, we text the number you give us, and you can reply STOP at any time to stop them.
Changes and ending your account
EQ Artists is changing quickly. We may add, change or remove features. You can stop using EQ Artists and ask us to close your account at any time by writing to writing@eqartists.com. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. The sections on your work, originality, disclaimers and limits of liability continue after an account closes.
Disclaimers and limits
EQ Artists is provided as it is and as available. We work to keep it running and your work safe, but we cannot promise it will be uninterrupted or free of errors. Keep your own copies of anything important.
To the extent the law allows, EQ is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for any claim about EQ Artists is limited to one hundred US dollars ($100). Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law rules. If a dispute comes up, write to us first and we will try to resolve it within 30 days. If we cannot, the dispute will be decided by the state or federal courts located in California, and you and EQ agree to their jurisdiction.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will tell you by email or in the dashboard before the change takes effect. Continuing to use EQ Artists after that means you accept the new terms.
